Settlers Life is an established final expense life insurance company that specializes in providing simplified issue, whole life insurance. We take pride in creating Special Plans for Special People and then backing them up with personalized service - every day and in every contact. Began as the Huff-Cook Mutual Burial Association. At that time, insurance certificates were sold through captive agents, predominately in Virginia.


In an effort to broaden the lines of business which could be offered to Huff-Cook members, and also to non- members, and to create the opportunity for the company to offer life insurance plans in states other than Virginia, Huff-Cook MBA decided to create an independent life insurance company. Settlers Life was born.


Through the late 1980's and into the early 1990's Settlers Life continued to grow and to expand. In 1999, Settlers Life became a member of the National Guardian Life Insurance Group.


Settlers Life is represented by over 6,500 agents in forty-four states and has earned the name America's Final Expense CompanySM. As of December 2016, our assets exceed $401 million dollars, with more than $42 million in surplus and over $1.83 billion dollars of life insurance in force.*

At Settlers Life we have always been very proud of our record of paying claims. We know that at the time of a loved one's death, having life insurance proceeds quickly and readily available to pay for final expenses can help relieve the stress of an emotional event.

"We Exist to Pay Claims" is a confirmation of why Settlers Life exists.

We are pleased to report that in 2017 we paid 7,726 death benefit claims and only rescinded 63, a claim payment percentage of 99.19%. We are also happy to report that those 7,726 paid claims represented a total of $30,533,943.70 in death benefits.

Claims are usually paid within 24-48 hours upon receipt of all required documents. You can be sure that when your final expense needs are the greatest, we will be there. That is TRUE peace of mind.

The Conestoga Wagon was purposefully adopted as the Settlers Life Logo. It depicts the pioneering spirit and strength associated with the Settlers Life brand. This type of wagon is significantly different from the ordinary farm wagons with canvas covers that carried many settlers westward. The Conestoga Wagon is a much heavier wagon. It was built to carry heavy loads and served as the primary overland freight carrier throughout the Appalachians until the development of the railroad.

The construction of the Conestoga closely symbolizes what Settlers Life stands for:

The People of Settlers Life are committed to providing final expense products that our policyholders recognize as valuable and meaningful, and to supporting those products with a level of service that stands apart from other companies.


Settlers Life understands that when people purchase one of our insurance products they expect security and peace of mind. One of our primary objectives is making sure that we meet that expectation by properly and wisely managing the premium payments our policyholders place with us.

Quality of Our Investments and of Our Reserves

Our investment policy matches that of our parent, National Guardian Life Insurance Company. We believe that safety and security for our policyholders is our number one concern. Stability should not be sacrificed for short-term yield. Therefore, our portfolio is focused on long-term success.

Settlers Life does not have "junk" or speculative bonds in its portfolio and its exposure in the equity market through common stocks is minimal.

As of December, 2016, our assets exceed $401 million dollars, with almost $42 million in capital and surplus and over $1.83 billion dollars of life insurance in force.*

Settlers Life A.M. Best Rating

A- (Excellent) (scale = A++ - F): The A.M. Best Company is the oldest and most widely recognized rating agency dedicated to the insurance industry. A.M. Best rates Settlers Life as an A minus and states that this rating "is assigned to companies which have, in our opinion, an excellent ability to meet their ongoing obligations to policyholders. This rating places Settlers Life well within A.M. Best's "secure" range.
